So planting tomatoes was a yearly event for us.
Was there much to it? Not really. This is simplistic but here’s a snapshot:
- prepare the soil
- plant the seeds
- water regularly
- perform maintenance
- pick the tomatoes
I know that seems just too easy but this is a hardy fruit or vegetable, depends what “side of the aisle” you’re on, and it is tough to “screw this up”.

Then it was watered and moistened. It was still late summer so the ground was hard.
Then we’d create what we called rows by use a hoe. This was simply done by walking up the down the field creating furrows.
Then the planting started. Seeds were pushed into the soil about half an inch down.
The ground was then lightly watered again and the waiting game began for the tomatoes to break ground.

The process is basically similar to planting and growing tomatoes outdoors.
We prepare soil and potting mix in a container. Then we would water it. This would be followed by planting the tomato seeds.
The pots would then be placed in a sunny area for most of the day. Tomatoes love the sunshine.
When the saplings were at a certain height, in our case, 4-6 inches, we would transplant them from there “pot environment” to the outdoor garden beds.

In the greenhouse, you could keep them warm enough to germinate. Once they sprout, move them outside.
Another benefit of starting them indoors is that you won’t have to worry about frost killing them off.
It takes about one week to ten days for tomatoes to germinate.

What About Seed Starting Kits?
Some people prefer to buy their seeds ready to go. That way, when they are ready to start, all they do is purchase the kit.
They may also choose to start their own seeds. But either way, once you start them, you will need to take care of them.
Seed starting kits contain everything you need to get started.

There are different types of tomatoes. The main difference between them is size.

Planting tomatoes outside gives you more control over the environment. That is you can choose the location, looking for a spot that gets lots of sunshine.
You can also add mulch around them to retain moisture. Obviously, doing this can get messy but outside that’s not a concern.
